The Book of Mormon is full of great men and women who lived lives of honor and valor. The primary theme for the year 2011 is “I know the scriptures are true”, this is a great opportunity to teach our children about some of these great men and women.
The first person that you become aquainted with in the Book of Mormon is the prophet Nephi. He describes himself as young and unsure. He wants to know for himself if the things his father is telling him are true. So, he goes and asks the Lord so that he can know for himself. After he gains a testimony of those things, he is willing to submit himself to the will of the Lord and do what he commands knowing that if he has faith, the Lord can help him do all things. During his whole life, whatever befell him Nephi still holds onto his faith and knows the Lord will always be there. I want my children to know him better.
Young men who saw their nation struggling wanted to help fight for their freedom and liberty. They were taught faith by their parents, and they knew if they did not doubt they would be protected, but they would also ask that the prophet would be their leader. They kept the commandments and followed a leader they could have absolute faith in. These Stripling Warriors who served under Helaman were protected and though not one of them came out of battle without wounds they lived. I want my children to know them better.
The Captian of an Army wanted only for the people of his nation to look to God and protect the liberty he had blessed them with. He wanted to remind them of their blessings and obligations, so he tore his coat and wrote on it. “In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole. Captain Moroni then rallied his nation to follow “The Title of Liberty” and all it stood for to protect their nation. I want my children to know him better
At the end of the Book of Mormon, there is another prophet who has watched his once great nation perish. His name is Moroni also, but instead of leading an Army that has turned their hearts to the Lord for help and protection, he is watching as their hatred and hard heartedness leads them to utter defeat. He mourns his people and pleads for his brethern who still live. He also prays for us. I want my children to know him better.
The person who is named more than anyone else in the book of mormon appears in the middle of the book. It is the Savior. He comes to visit his other sheep that live in the Americas. He blesses them and teaches them. He prays for them as they would have him tarry longer. I really want my children to know him better
I would challenge anyone to take advantage of this next years theme and help your children and all children better know the scriptures and those in them so that they can also say, ” I know the scriptures are true.”
